Sensory Seeking vs Sensory Avoiding: Why You May Be Both
You can avoid fluorescent lights and still crave loud music or deep pressure. Learn how sensory seeking and avoiding vary by sense, context, and capacity.
You wear noise-cancelling headphones in the supermarket, then play the same song loudly on the way home. You dislike unexpected touch but sleep better under firm pressure. This is not inconsistent. Sensory needs are not a single dial from sensitive to insensitive.
A person may seek input in one sensory system and avoid it in another. The same input can also shift from regulating to unbearable depending on control, predictability, fatigue, stress, pain, and how much stimulation has already accumulated.
What sensory avoiding means
Sensory avoiding is an attempt to reduce input that feels painful, distracting, unpredictable, or costly to process. It can involve leaving crowded places, cutting labels from clothes, controlling food textures, dimming lights, or needing recovery after conversation.
Avoidance is not automatically a fear to overcome. Sometimes it is an effective accommodation. The useful question is whether it protects participation and health or shrinks life in a way the person wants help changing.
What sensory seeking means
Sensory seeking is moving toward input that supports alertness, regulation, pleasure, or body awareness. Examples include pacing, rocking, chewing, touching textures, listening to strong music, seeking deep pressure, or choosing intense flavours.
Repetitive movement may be self-regulation rather than purposeless behaviour. Stopping it without understanding its function can remove a person’s coping tool while leaving the underlying need unchanged.
Control changes the experience
Chosen music has a clear source, expected rhythm, and an off switch. Office chatter arrives unpredictably from several directions and carries social meaning. Both are sound, but the processing demand is different.
This is why generic advice such as ‘but you like loud concerts’ misunderstands sensory experience. Predictability, meaning, duration, and control often matter as much as intensity.
Build a profile by sensory channel
Map patterns separately for sound, light, touch, taste, smell, movement, balance, body position, and internal body signals.
- What input do I seek when under-alert or restless?
- What input becomes painful when tired?
- Which sensations are easier when I control the start and stop?
- What are my earliest signs of overload?
- Which tools help without creating a new problem?
Aim for access, not a perfectly quiet life
Useful changes may include quiet hours, adjustable lighting, clothing choices, movement breaks, seating near an exit, written communication, or permission to use headphones. The aim is enough regulation to participate in what matters, not eliminating every difficult sensation.
Sudden sensory changes, pain, hearing or vision problems, dizziness, or severe food restriction need professional assessment. Sensory patterns occur in autism and ADHD but also outside them; no single sensory preference proves a diagnosis.
